To get the installer file again, you need to go to your App Store purchased list, option click the Lion and then you will get an Install button again. Whats better than this picture if you live in Canada? It's April 17, it is a few weeks after the intro of the iPad. It is also a few days after Apple announced that all the International versions would be delayed another month. With the units selling very well in the US, it obviously caused shortage. When I heard the bad news for Canada (good news for Apple), my first reaction was, is this going to be the first of other delays?

I need one to tests some Apps, so further delays would mean longer delays for my apps and some other projects.

This all meant that I had to make a trip to the closest Apple store in the US, so on the 16th, a road trip to Buffalo. It was lucky my client moved a meeting a week out, so the day opened up last minute.

Just so you know. The pads are still on short supply. You can't just call a store and put a credit card down to purchase and show up the next day to pick them up. The sales person said you have to show up at a store to place an order ( in case you want a partcular model ), she said you have to be at the store to purchase. I explained that I was 2 hours away, how would they guarantee my trip wouldn't be a wasted trip? She said to drive fast after I call in the morning to confirm stock.

So I called the night before and started out 8am to be at the store when it opened. The limit is 2 units. I was lucky to get a 32gb, the 2nd guy behind was told to come back next week. They didn't have any 16 or 64gb versions.

Last bit, read the reviews already posted by all the tech journalist. My opinion - It is a gread device.

Time Machine Error

A bunch of issue with time machine backup's not working. Fixes that I found for the different errors were
to check that there was a name for the volume or share, check the sharing setup name, eliminate long names and spaces.

Another area to look is the current System Log (/var/log/system.log), this will tell you what the specific error is.

In one setup, Filemaker server was running and a couple of files in the library could not be read while the server was running. To get around this, you can add those folders in the exclude section of the backup.

Clearing your local DNS cache (DNS FLUSH)

When transferring a domain name or updating your nameservers for the domain, your local computer DNS servers might be still resolving your old site IP or perform queries to your old domain's DNS servers - which will lead to either you not being able to access your new site or you will be acessing the site hosted with your previous hosting company.

Usually after certain period of time (time to live - usually 24-72 hours) your local computer will naturally start to resolve your new site address and query your new domain DNS servers.

Clearing your local computer DNS cache (DNS FLUSH) could help expedite this process and in 90% you will be able to access your new site immediately.

To clear your local DNS cache on Windows XP/2000/2003:

·         Click Start > Run.
Enter ipconfig /flushdns in the “Open:” textbox.

To clear your local DNS cache in Mac OSX:

·         In Mac OSX Leopard, you can use the command dnscacheutil -flushcache to flush the DNS resolver cache:

bash-2.05a$  dscacheutil –flushcache

·         In Mac OSX versions 10.5.1 and before, the command lookupd -flushcache performed the same task:

bash-2.05a$ lookupd -flushcache

In combination with the above - you may need to reboot your computer and/or clear your browser cache.

If the above steps still do not help - please, allow 24-72 hours for the new DNS change to take place and propagate throughout the Internet. If after this time you still can not access your new account - please contact our support.

HTTP Status Codes

The Twitter API attempts to return appropriate HTTP status codes for every request. It is possible to surpress response codes for the REST API.

200 OK: Success!

304 Not Modified: There was no new data to return.

400 Bad Request: The request was invalid. An accompanying error message will explain why. This is the status code will be returned during rate limiting.

401 Not Authorized: Authentication credentials were missing or incorrect.

403 Forbidden: The request is understood, but it has been refused. An accompanying error message will explain why. This code is used when requests are being denied due to update limits.

404 Not Found: The URI requested is invalid or the resource requested, such as a user, does not exists.

406 Not Acceptable: Returned by the Search API when an invalid format is specified in the request.

500 Internal Server Error: Something is broken. Please post to the group so the Twitter team can investigate.

502 Bad Gateway: Twitter is down or being upgraded.

503 Service Unavailable: The Twitter servers are up, but overloaded with requests. Try again later. The search and trend methods use this to indicate when you are being rate limited.

Error Messages

When the Twitter API returns error messages, it does so in your requested format. For example, an error from an XML method might look like this:

Mac OS X 10.5 unable to login after update

A quick note on a clients system that pickup up BankerFox.A and Nuqel.E trojans plus a bunch of porn pop ups.

These were very clever trojans, disabling just about anything you need to run to remove them. The also ran in memory, so once you removed them, they wrote themselves back into the system.

After numerous tries of the different posts out there on the internet, the following is what I found that work for this client.

There are post that tells you to use the Spy Hunter package, they may work but you have to pay for the software.

All of the posts that I found on the internet as of Nov 10/2009 did not work, I tried a number of them.

The free solution that I used to remove was as follows.

I used SmitFraudFix v2.423 (WinXP, Win2K), (http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php) and the free home edition of
Avast 4.8 ( http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html )

Put the system in to safe mode and run SmithFraudFix. Run the Avast 4.8 after, it will detect the trojan in memory and ask to do a restart to do a memory scan on startup. Ok this and let it do the scan. Once it finds the trojans, do a delete.

Once is it finished, it will restart. Instead of letting it restart in regular mode so that it can continue with a regular scan. Power the system down before it restarts. Restart it back into safe mode and do another full scan with Avast.

The test focused only on the malware removal/cleaning capabilities, therefore all used samples were samples that the tested antivirus products were able to detect. The main question was if the products are able to successfully remove malware
from an already infected/compromised system. The test report was aimed to typical home users. A further question was if the products are able to remove what they are able to detect.
Based on a scoring system that evaluated malware and leftovers removal capabilities, these were the results:

"None of the products performed “very good” in malware removal or removal of leftovers, based on those 10 samples. eScan, Symantec and Microsoft (MSE) were the only products to be good in removal of malware AND removal of leftovers", says the report. "Some products do not remove all registry entries on purpose (as long as they do not have any visible side effect for the user), e.g. if that helps to prevent reinfection by the same malware. Furthermore, in some cases it is not possible to know if the registry values (or the hosts file) were modified by the malware or by the user itself (or third-party utilities used by the user)."

I just talked to someone who thought they pulled a quick one with their cell phone provider by entering in the id and password for the Edge network on their iPhone. I warned this person when they did this that they should double check and that they most likely will get billed for all the data that is transferred when they are playing around with their iPhone. She figured that since she did not sign up for any data plan that she would not get billed.

Do you use more then one computer at a time like I do. Some of you will ask, why in earth would you use more then one computer at time. Simple answer is that you have multiple things processing and doing them on one computer is slow.

If you do use a couple of systems and need to see what is happening on the different computers and want to save some space by eliminating the multiple keyboards and mice. You can do this by using a open source program called Synergy. This is not new, I thought I would post this as I had to add another computer into my setup and thought I would mention that it has full support for Mac OSX leopard. It works with PC/Mac/Unix and allow you to mix all the environments.

Just to clarify, this is not the same as using a switch to change the monitor to display a different computer, e.g. a couple of computer all sharing the same keyboard, mouse and screen. This only let you view one computer at a time. Usually you see this in a server room.

This setup allows you to see all the screens at the same time and allow you to have one keyboard and mouse with any costs. You can have all the monitors setup across the desk and have one mouse and keyboard for all the computers. When you move the mouse to the edge of the screen, it will move to the next computer. You can place the monitors across left or right and on top or bottom.

Tavo iPhone gloves

Using an iphone in the winter with gloves on is very hard, your fingers cannot get the screen to react with gloves on. Tavo offers a pair of gloves with a special material on the index finger and thumb. They also have some rubber patches in the palms for better grip. Monster iPhone adapter

Bought one of these adapters, works great with Apple ear buds, the adapter plugs into iPhone and has a separate line with a mic that you can clip on your shirt. Your old ear phones plug into this adapter. It was $20 dollars. I tried them with the Apple ear buds and they worked great. I tried with with my Shure headphone and the sound was not as rich.

A couple of ways you can do this.

Use gmail, save files as attachments. There is a handy download utility that will mount you gmail as a network drive on your pc. This allow you to drag and drop files to your gmail account. Mac , PC

Buy an .mac account. Comes with up to 10gb of storage, depending on how much you allocate to .mac mail. This cost $99/year, however there are a bunch of other services included with a .mac account.

mozy - 4.95/month and you get 2gb of encrypted storage. 30 days before older versions are deleted. - Good if you need to go back to an old copy of a file.

carbonite - 49.95/year, for unlimited space. Data is encrypted and they only keep recent copies.

OLED Displays

Ringtones for iPhone

The iPhone is really cool with all the applications that you can download and use, from a Super Nintendo emulator, Sudoku and the NY city location finder with subway map (alway had to carry the map when in NY). With all this free stuff, how can you get ring tones into the iPhone.

Disclaimer: do at your own risk, I am not endorsing the methods or programs listed in this post. This method worked for my iPhone.

This is what I have discovered. Goto http://tonefm.com/

There are other sites, but this one has a good number is a number of different categories. They are also in mp3 format. You'll notice that if you play the tone, it only plays and doesn't download. In actual fact when something plays to a browser, it is actually downloading onto your computer (exceptions are a stream, but there are ways around that). To actually get the mp3 tone, I used Firefox and downloaded the free plug in called Download Helper. This is a free plug in will capture the tone and allow you to save the file to a folder.

Once you have the mp3 files, you need to download them to the iPhone. The easiest way is to use a piece of software called iToner (Mac only) available at:
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/itoner/

You can use it for free for a limited time or just purchase the program it is very cheap and well worth it. This program will sync to your iPhone and all you need to do is drag the mp3 into the iToner window and press sync.

To get your favorite song as a ring tone will require a bit of work or you can use iTunes and pay the 99 cents. If you want to do it yourself. Get a copy of Audacity at: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ , the program is open source and free.

This program will allow you to take a segment out of your favorite song. Most ring tones are a total of 24 seconds or less. Once you get this 24 second segment, you can save it to a audio format for download. I won't go into how this program works, you can read up on it once you download it.

I have not looked to see if there are equivalent or easy ways to do this on a PC. I am sure there are programs that will allow you to do this. I use both platforms but found it very simple with iToner. There are other ways like using sftp to get to the ring tones directory to get your ring tones loaded, but the method is for the more technical person. You can search the internet for the directions on this. You actually need to do this to load the NES games.

Converting Outlook email to Apple mail

If your using Outlook as an email client to handle all of your email and want to convert the mail, contacts, calender to Apple iCal, Mail and contacts. The easy way to do this is to use a program call O2M (it cost $10, http://www.littlemachines.com), it makes the conversion easy. It converts the Outlook mail, contacts and calendar entries into corresponding files need for import into Apple mail, iCal and contacts. I had half a million messages in a lot of different folders and it kept all the folders intact with attachments. Well worth the 10 bucks. The reason I converted was to get the better integration for my iPhone.

iPhone for Christmas

Got an 1.1.2 iPhone for Christmas. Not a big deal for most people but I'm in Canada where the phone is not available. Most of the phones that are used in Canada are using the firmware 1.1.1 and since all the new phones are 1.1.2, the 1.1.1 phones are extremely rare. They are also selling for a lot more than the 1.1.2 versions. At the time of this post the 1.1.2 can not be unlocked for general use.

To get the new iPhones to work, you need to find a Stealthsim or Turbosim. The phone needs to be jailbroken. Video can be found on youtube. The Stealthsim is place over your existing Rogers or Fido sim and inserted back into the phone. There is a small cut (2mmx4mm) that needs to be done to your existing Fido/Rogers sim, it does nothing to the sim (it is only a little bit of the plastic). Using this work around is better than hacking the 1.1.1 phones as it keeps the original bootloader 4.6 in tack. This means you can restore the phone to factory if you need to get it back to Apple for warranty. I also found that my buddies hacked 1.1.1 does not work with the Fido data plan, so he only gets wifi, but I have another buddy that has a hacked phone that has both the data and wifi working so it depends on the type of unlocking you get done on the iphones.

The only downside to the extra sim is that it costs $100 or more. So there is an additional cost. The 1.1.1 versions can be unlocked at minimal cost. Check ebay or craigslist. At the time of this posting, the sims are vary hard to get or they are being offered at $150 usd.
